Artists Michael Shumiatcher

Michael Shumiatcher graduated from the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in 1984 and has been teaching art in public high schools since 1994. His work is mostly based in minimalist and conceptual traditions, with additional influences from the pioneer of Modernism, Brancusi. The Art Deco style of John Storrs and vorticist Gaudier-Brzeska are also important influences, as is the work and writings of Robert Smithson. Shumiatcher’s orientation to his own practice could be likened to that of a spiritual quest for truth. Shumiatcher has shown in
Halifax, Calgary and Vancouver and has been reviewed in Parachute magazine.
