One wall of the gallery space will be painted in mud, creating a wallpaper design. The design will reflect a Victorian style/motif, appropriate to the influx or height of colonization. The design will continue partially onto the floor. The second installation is composed of rolls of silkscreened paper, printed with a wallpaper pattern hanging from the ceiling and rolling out onto the floor. The rolls of paper form a small room, closed in on itself, hiding/sheltering a pair of moccasins. The moccasins are made of a flimsy/transparent fabric and are filled with earth. The final installation is an apparent mound on the floor. Wound around itself, it is a long beaded length of interfacing made to form a shelter.

This exhibition features long patch paper murals combining mixed media techniques of papermaking, painting, staining, printmaking, and collage and explores animist imagery from folklore and mythologies. Ihaya's work is based in printmaking techniques of etching and chine colle. Her work evokes the natural world and uses archetypal images in a new and exciting way.

Working with The City of Vancouver's Transit Shelter Advertising Program, grunt facilitated the production and distribution of posters by Mark Mizgala. Artist Mark Mizgala presents posters of pop bottles and other containers coated in slip, creating a look of ancient clay vessels in this off-site exhibition entitled, Remains. Mizgala investigates contemporary food and beverage packaging, represented as mock archaeological findings. The artwork appears in a form that is intrinsic to advertising: posters printed on commercial-grade paper and displayed in bus shelters across the City of Vancouver. Having worked as an art director for most of his professional career, advertising is familiar territory for Mizgala. He is fascinated by the corporate machine, its by-products, and the manner in which they are presented in popular culture. Mizgala immortalizes on film that which is already immortal: garbage, enjoying a particularly long life in our landfills, rivers, and ocean floors. The poster series is a testament to long-term environmental impact – a sharp contrast to the ephemera of advertising and mass media.

Vancouver-based printmaker Marlene Yuen’s explorations of Chinese Canadian labour histories have through the years taken the form of intricately produced print and paper-based media. Through ‘zines, comics, lovingly crafted artists books and – new for this exhibition – site-specific artworks, Yuen’s body of work comes off the pages and onto the walls. In precise and attentive craftsmanship, Yuen brings dimension to both the known and the overlooked histories of immigrant labour. Drawing from oral histories and archival research inspired by Yuen’s own family history, Cheap! Diligent! Faithful! acknowledges the complexities of labour and immigration in this country – and lifts up the small, remarkable details of lived experience. The exhibition includes the launch of Yuen’s new publication that explores the graphic and cultural history of Ho Sun Hing Printers which closed in 2014, after 106 years of business in Vancouver’s Chinatown.
