"I see my work as personal resistance to ugly and predetermined ways of understanding sexuality and spirit and the place where they intersect. Resistance is crucial to girls if we are to survive spirits unbroken. For me humour is a weapon of self-defence and a source of healing. In laughing at something that has given undue authority, for example, a penis or any related patriarchal construct like a tower, I can take away some of its power over me. In the same way, when I laugh together with other women, we ease our pain and summon the courage we need to continue the resistance."
