Skullduggery is a painting installation rooted in palio-archaeology and physical anthropology. The works consist of an installation of many small paintings of skulls taken from the human fossil record painted on wadded pages of art magazines. The skulls trace the range of human evolution, and the magazine pages, a record of art practices. Together they express the fragility of ourselves as a species and the punctuality of art movements. The installation presents a periodic story of our species painted on periodicals.

“The Sea Is A Stereo” by artist Mounira Al Solh, introduces us to a group of men who swim daily at a beach in Beirut, Lebanon. This practice of swimming takes place despite varying circumstances relating to weather, the change of seasons, and the conflict of war and politics. The work is made up of several elements that use video, photographs and audio-recorded interviews. While these men are connected through their swimming ritual, Al Solh further connects these men to their surroundings, practice and socio-political issues by means of a visual and audio-based installation. This exhibition will take place in the main front room at grunt gallery.The exhibition will also include a newly created work by Mounira Al Solh, entitled, “A Double Burger and Two Metamorphoses: a proposal for a Dutch Cat, a Dutch Dog, a Dutch Donkey, a Dutch Goat and finally, a Dutch Camel”. An ongoing project created in 2010, the artist forces herself to be locked inside an empty house for three days while she communicates through scripted conversations.

In museums, adventure is linked to the value of discovery, and the idea of improvement. Museums tend to promote designs rather than accidents, planned events rather than phenomena that simply occur. In the performance museum, we consider the slippage between conquests, the inability to complete, the illusion of permanence/stability. The title suggests not only a Miss-Adventure performing the museum, but a Museum of miss-adventures. The work re-collects this reality of limited control, placing composition in relation to breakdown.

Media and installation artist Josephin Böttger presents a new work entitled Dynamo Lines, which looks at the fragmentation of cityscapes caused by social constructs, urban development, traffic, lights and movement. Three looped video projections depict time-lapsed motion and light from various vantage points of city grids and traffic. Working with musician Sergej Tolksdorf, Böttger’s video installation includes footage of actors emerging as a work team, observing busy highway arteries. But their movements are edited so they appear sporadic, contrapunctual to the rythm and flow of light from the streets. Josephin Böttger presented Trapez at New Forms Festival. The video documents the construction work that occurs at a building site; time and reality is distorted by time lapses and drawn elements that blend into the footage. The video examines construction and demolition, both key components of urban development.

Grunt gallery is pleased to present Christoph Runné’s 16mm film installation entitled “Baum”. “Baum” uses multiple 16mm film projections to create a sparse and virtual forest that is traversed by a solitary figure that appears both rooted and moving throughout the frames. The cyclical and repetitive movement of the abstract wanderer suggests a passage of time, and a path through the subconscious as the drifter searches for his or her place. An attempt to give form to intangible abstractions, such as “longing” or “isolation,” is evident in the discontinuous flickering of the trees caused by the single-frame footage shot of a motion picture camera—a staccato movement suggestive of Morse-code communication or the arrhythmic pressing of typewriter keys. Through this work, Runné explores the visual symbolism of the tree. While the human condition often seems caught in cycles of hopelessness, homelessness, poverty, and “uprooted-ness”, caused by socio-economic strife, wars, and refugeeism, despite great wealth, education, and promise which should be able to allay suffering— Trees, in contrast, stand vigil; firmly rooted— steadfast reminders of survival, regeneration, and hope within natures’ grander cycles. Man’s reflection on his place in nature is timeless, and the poetic metaphors which trees inspire are as relevant in a contemporary context as they were in antiquity.

“Holding Our Breath” by Adrian Stimson, is a large-scale installation based on the artist’s first hand experiences and observations at a military base in Kandahar, Afghanistan. The work is informed by conversations Stimson had with soldiers, some of which were First Nations, and his impression with daily life occurring at the military base situated in the vast Middle Eastern landscape. The work includes the Stimson’s own personal perspective of serving in the military as well as his family’s history serving in the Canadian military as soldiers and historically as Blackfoot warriors. These experiences, in addition to Stimson’s time spent in Kandahar, allows the artist to approach these topics from a perspective that questions the essence of conflict and how this links between personal, cultural, and military identity."

The exhibition features several installations that reveal the curious fictional world that the artists refers to as, Lamb's Performing Objects. Russian lacquerware, rusty metal household objects and clockwork mechanisms perform in Bits and Tatters, the first installment of a video trilogy. Accompanying this video is a song that Lamb wrote and produced with composer and singer, Beverly Dobrinsky.
