The show consists of photographs by Oraf, of the Pitt, Brian Lynch of Available Light Studios, Juan Rey whose work appears in Angles, Daniel Collins and Bob Jemison. Because the work is so diverse we have titled the show "Homo Erratica" and hope it mirrors the complexities and ambiguities of being gay in a world that constantly flashes back images that don't reflect our realities or concerns. Guest performance by Billy Gene, "Mr Alternator Vancouver".

A retrospective and collaborative project based on Background/Vancouver, a photo-mapping expedition of Vancouver by Michael de Courcy with Taki Bluesinger, Gerry Gilbert, and Glenn Lewis on October, 30 1972. The project consists of the four artists walking three separate paths documenting their experiences in photographs. On October 30, 2012, Vancouver artists, Emilio Rojas, Guadelupe Martinez, and Igor Santizo, revisited this conceptual project. 40 years to the day, these three artists came together to forge a new, fourth path that intersects with the original paths which revisits ideas about Vancouver's identity and history. The retrospective project is entitled, ThisPlace/Vancouver

This exhibition is comprised of multiple series of black and white photographs and a video that address the personal and sociopolitical context of working as an artist in contemporary Iranian-middle eastern culture. The sequencing of the photos fosters a subtle narrative effect in each series. The subjects addressed in the photos include embodied cultural and social confusion; alienation in a “wired” world; and loss of beauty in a socially restricted life. In these series, which are strongly affected by the political situation of Iran, after the wane of the recent social movement, Ahadi strives to represent the sociopolitical truth of his country through a number of personal spaces dominated by a profound sense of confusion and uncertainty; the truth, which is shining in the absence of those commotions.

“The Sea Is A Stereo” by artist Mounira Al Solh, introduces us to a group of men who swim daily at a beach in Beirut, Lebanon. This practice of swimming takes place despite varying circumstances relating to weather, the change of seasons, and the conflict of war and politics. The work is made up of several elements that use video, photographs and audio-recorded interviews. While these men are connected through their swimming ritual, Al Solh further connects these men to their surroundings, practice and socio-political issues by means of a visual and audio-based installation. This exhibition will take place in the main front room at grunt gallery.The exhibition will also include a newly created work by Mounira Al Solh, entitled, “A Double Burger and Two Metamorphoses: a proposal for a Dutch Cat, a Dutch Dog, a Dutch Donkey, a Dutch Goat and finally, a Dutch Camel”. An ongoing project created in 2010, the artist forces herself to be locked inside an empty house for three days while she communicates through scripted conversations.

An extensive assembly of photographs, taken at various places the artist has visited over recent years, is composed through various signifiers and aesthetics. The images depict locations considered public and private, claimed and unsigned spaces, forms of the common, socio/ideological stage fronts, and domestic settings.These photographs are from Salloum’s ongoing body of work, untitled: photographs, that attempts to critically engage in the representation of public and private space. location/dis-location(s) approaches coming to terms with what it means to be making photographs here (and elsewhere) and the exploration of the possibilities of visualizing the nature of natural, urban, semi-urban, and sub-urban environments (and the totality of the constructs signified in those terms).

Mainstreeters: Taking Advantage, 1972-1982 is an exhibition, website and publication that takes a close look at a self-identified collective of socially and artistically motivated men and women who came of age on Vancouver’s Main Street—once the dividing line between a predominantly Anglo middle-class west side and a multicultural working-class east side. The exhibition at Satellite Gallery contributes to the larger project of bringing to light an under-recognized chapter of Vancouver art history. The Mainstreeters—Kenneth Fletcher, Deborah Fong, Carol Hackett, Marlene MacGregor, Annastacia McDonald, Charles Rea, Jeanette Reinhardt and Paul Wong—were an “art gang” who took advantage of the times, a new medium (video), and each other. Emerging from the end-stage hippie era, the gang drew from glam, punk and a thriving gay scene to become an important node in the local art scene. Their activities connect the influential interdisciplinary salon of Roy Kiyooka in the early 1960s with the collective-oriented social practices that emerged worldwide in the early years of the 21st century. Like the current “digital natives” generation, the Mainstreeters were the first generation to grow up with video cameras. The resulting documents bring into focus a decade of their lives, including forays into sex, love, drugs and art.
